Book Review: Two Tales of the Moon By Jennifer Sun

Two Tales of the Moon
By Jennifer Sun
Genre: Literary fiction

Two lives converge over a high stake international deal between U.S. and China - Will Donovan, a successful cyber technology business owner and Lu Li, a Wall Street investment banker. From New York City to Washington, DC, to Shanghai, together they have to face ethical dilemmas, make life choices, and come to terms with their past.

East meets West, past clashes with present. Blending romantic suspense with ethical intrigue. TWO TALES OF THE MOON is a compelling story that reveals that human struggle is the same regardless one's past or cultural upbringing.

Clarion/Forward gave the book a four star rating, calls it "a thoughtful portrait of a modern woman who must choose between the burden of memory and a future of her own making...the writing takes on the sharpened focus of a play... the work effectively captures the effects of communism in searingly personal ways.

BlueInk Review says:

"Jennifer  Sun  draws  on  personal  knowledge  of  China  and  a  former  career  in telecommunications/finance  for  her  well-crafted  debut  novel  about  the  meeting  of  East  and West. Blending romance and  ethical  intrigue,  Two Tales of the Moon  is  a  unique  novel, with characters of psychological depth.

Book Review

I was fascinated by the time period in which Lu Li was a young child and witnessed her family going through hard times within their country of China. I could have read an entire book of just their family's story. I think it's important that the author went into detail with Li's past because it made you understand her so much more. This was a great book - 4.5 stars!

Book Review

I really liked the way Monica Patton writes! It's different than most books I read. She finds a way to share emotions and descriptions in a short but energetic way. Beautiful Carnage is the literary balance between good and evil or beauty and ugliness. The characters are well-developed and the plot is gripping. Great job! 5 stars!

All the Wrong Ways
By M.M. Charles
Genre: Mystery/Thriller & Woman's Fiction

While discovering the ugly facts about her new client, Abra's doubts about the alleged rape makes her question the parties involved as well as herself.

Who is to blame? Or better yet, who is honest?

Book Review:

All the Wrong Ways contained a tremendous amount of mystery. Throughout the story you are making assumptions on who committed the crime or even if there was a crime. The author keeps you guessing page after page. I loved the plot. It was intriguing! Lark was a very interesting girl. Even though some may question her actions, I feel like she is a strong character. I would rate this book 5 stars!

Review: Broken Places

Broken Places

Genre: Memoir

Book Description:

Award-winning author Rachel Thompson courageously confronts the topics of sexual abuse and suicide, love and healing, in her second nonfiction book of prose: Broken Places. The sequel to Rachel's first nonfiction book, Broken Pieces, Rachel bares her soul in essays, poems and prose, addressing life's most difficult topics with honesty. As you follow one woman's journey through the dark and into the light, you will find yourself forever changed. Rachel's first book in this series, Broken Pieces, has been a #1 best seller on Amazon (eBooks) on Women's Poetry and Abuse. Please note: this book discusses serious topics, and is intended for mature audiences only.

Review

It was sad to read the abuse that Rachel endured but I can see how other survivors could relate to this book. I admire the author for sharing herself and her abuse because it's subject matter that is considered taboo and swept under the rug. But if we aren't talking about it, we aren't helping the innocent people being abused. Rachel Thompson is a talented writer. 5 stars.

Book Review: Spinner by Micheal J Bowler

Spinner
By Michael J. Bowler
Genre: YA horror/paranormal
Publisher: YoungDudes Publishing

Fifteen-year-old Alex is a “spinner.” His friends are “dummies.” Two clandestine groups of humans want his power. And an ancient evil is stalking him. If people weren’t being murdered, Alex might laugh at how his life turned into a horror movie overnight.

In a wheelchair since birth, his freakish ability has gotten him kicked out of ten foster homes since the age of four. Now saddled with a sadistic housemother who uses his spinning to heal the kids she physically abuses, Alex and his misfit group of learning disabled classmates are the only ones who can solve the mystery of his birth before more people meet a gruesome end.

They need to find out who murdered their beloved teacher, and why the hot young substitute acts like she’s flirting with them. Then there’s the mysterious medallion that seems to have unleashed something malevolent, and an ancient prophecy suggesting Alex has the power to destroy humanity.

The boys break into homes, dig up graves, elude kidnappers, fight for their lives against feral cats, and ultimately confront an evil as old as humankind. Friendships are tested, secrets uncovered, love spoken, and destiny revealed.

The kid who’s always been a loner will finally learn the value of friends, family, and loyalty.

If he survives…

Review:

Spinner is about a young teenage boy, Alex, who is handicapped and lives with a malicious housemother. Alex is the "dummy" class and he's also a "spinner," so he has some pretty awesome powers. But it comes with not-so awesome things like two different groups of people wanting his gift. A string of murders in Hawthorne starts around Alex's birthday, including Alex's teacher. The only ones helping Alex solve this mystery are his fellow disabled peers. So now they need to find the truth about a weird substitute, a medallion and these troublesome murders.

Spinner had me captivated. It was amazing. There was a new twist in the story that would have me holding my breath. I started Spinner and finished it in one sitting. The relationship between Alex and Roy was absolutely true. I could relate to the friendship with my own best friend. I also loved how close Alex and his classmates were, I mean that is friendship goals right there. This novel was filled with love, loyalty, mystery, and a lot of humor. I applaud Mr. Bowler. I look forward to recommending this book, and reading it a second time. This is a five out of five stars.

Author Bio:

Michael J. Bowler is an award-winning author of eight novels––A Boy and His Dragon, A Matter of Time (Silver Medalist from Reader’s Favorite), and The Knight Cycle, comprised of five books: Children of the Knight (Gold Award Winner in the Wishing Shelf Book Awards), Running Through A Dark Place, There Is No Fear, And The Children Shall Lead, Once Upon A Time In America, and Spinner.

He grew up in San Rafael, California, and majored in English and Theatre at Santa Clara University. He went on to earn a master’s in film production from Loyola Marymount University, a teaching credential in English from LMU, and another master's in Special
Education from Cal State University Dominguez Hills.

He acted as producer, writer, and/or director on several ultra-low-budget horror films, including “Fatal Images,” “Club Dead,” and “Things II.”

He taught high school in Hawthorne, California for twenty-five years, both in general education and to students with learning disabilities, in subjects ranging from English and Strength Training to Algebra, Biology, and Yearbook.

He has also been a volunteer Big Brother to eight different boys with the Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters program and a thirty-year volunteer within the juvenile justice system in Los Angeles.

He has been honored as Probation Volunteer of the Year, YMCA Volunteer of the Year, California Big Brother of the Year, and 2000 National Big Brother of the Year. The “National” honor allowed him and three of his Little Brothers to visit the White House and meet the president in the Oval Office.

He is currently working on a sequel to Spinner. His goal as a YA author is for teens to experience empowerment and hope; to see themselves in his diverse characters; to read about kids who face real-life challenges; and to see how kids like them can remain decent people in an indecent world.

* Spinner won Honorable Mention in Young Adult Books of 2015 from the San Francisco Book Festival.

{Book Review & Giveaway} Polarity in Motion by Brenda Vicars

Polarity in Motion
By Brenda Vicars
Genre: YA

Fifteen-year-old Polarity Weeks just wants to live a normal life, but with a mother diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, that’s rarely easy. Her life gets exponentially more disastrous when her sixth-period history classmates start ogling a nude picture of her on the Internet. Polarity would never have struck such a shameless pose, but the photo is definitely of her, and she’s at a complete loss to explain its existence.

Child Protective Services yanks her from her home, suspecting her parents. The kids at school mock her, assuming she took it herself. And Ethan, the boy she was really starting to like, backpedals and joins the taunting chorus. Surrounded by disbelief and derision on all sides, Polarity desperately seeks the truth among her friends. Only then does she learn that everyone has dark secrets, and no one’s life is anywhere near normal.

Review

Polarity in Motion is a book about a young teen, Polarity, who has a not-so-easy life, with a mother with borderline personality disorder which has them constantly moving. So when you throw in a nude picture of her that is circling through the entire school and social services taking her away, she’s trying to search for the truth. Polarity also starts to crush on Ethan, a boy who seemed at first the only one who would help her, then starts ignoring her out of the blue. As the story goes on, Polarity uncovers the truth, maybe more than she expected.

Polarity in Motion was genius. I was captivated the whole time, it had me on the edge of my seat. As a teenage girl myself, I felt for Polarity. When I first started this book, I asked myself, “How would deal I with this awful situation?” My answer was not the same as what Polarity did. This book was intense to the core and I loved it. I thought it was great that Polarity’s story wasn’t the only one told by Ms. Vicars.I also enjoyed Ethan’s, her mother’s and her grandmother’s. I applaud Ms. Vicars, this is a five star book.

{blog tour} Book Review: The Anonymous Source by A.C. Fuller

The Anonymous Source
By A.C. Fuller
Genre: Thriller

Find the Source. Break the Story. Stay Alive.

ONE YEAR AFTER the 9/11 attacks, Alex Vane—a brilliant, carb-obsessed reporter for The New York Standard—wants nothing more than to break into the flashy world of TV news. But when he uncovers the scoop of a lifetime, his tightly controlled world is rocked: his editor buries his story, a source turns up dead, and Alex finds himself at the center of a violent media conspiracy.

AS HE RECEIVES TIPS from a mysterious source, Alex enlists the help of a captivating professor, Camila Gray. Aided by an Internet genius, a billionaire’s sexy widow, and a washed-up sports reporter, Alex and Camila discover a $500-million secret that leads back to the morning of 9/11.

IT’S A SECRET that unearths dark memories from Alex’s past. And it’s a secret that could get them both killed.

Review:

The Anonymous Source started off fast-paced and takes you down a path you could never have expected. I was impressed with how the author blended two murders, a corporate merger, and the life of a fireball journalist. It's a wild plot!

This was a text heavy read, but I had no problem cruising through it because there was non-stop action and suspense. I thought the relationship between Alex (the journalist) and Camila (ex-girlfriend of one of the murder victims) was interesting and enjoyable.

Overall, I loved how the author spun a thriller which involved a huge historical event in our history. The ending has you begging for book two!
