Review: Walking Home by Arleen Williams

Walking Home
By Arleen Williams
Genre: Contemporary Women’s Fiction

Book Description:

Walking Home is a compelling glimpse into the lives of emigrés in modern day America–refugees from genocide and war. The book journeys from loss and grief to survival and joy. The story hits the ground running, literally, with Kidane’s escape from Africa that reaches far into his future into Seattle, Washington. Kidane battles with survivor guilt while he struggles to settle into Seattle, a new life, relationship, school and work. He wants the American dream but is haunted by the past where he survived horrific violence in Africa, and was forced to leave everything and everyone he loved, behind.
Beautifully written, this poignant and intimate portrait of survivors is a must read for anyone seeking to understand the lives of emigrants in our evolving communities.

Review:

Walking Home is a novel about modern day refugees and their heart breaking stories. This story begins with Kidane escaping Africa and then to his new home in Seattle. Kidane begins experiencing guilt, a new relationship, school and work. He wants to forget the past, but it doesn't want to forget him. Readers learn about the daily life of an immigrant in our modern day society.

Walking Home is infatuating. I have never read another story like it before. I enjoyed the knowledge that was given to me, it was like being in a fun version of history class. I loved that the book switched perspectives, that was genius with each chapter I'd get all excited to read so-in-so's part. I put every ounce of attention into the book because you need it, each detail is so well written, Ms. Arleen Williams did a fantastic job and I look forward to reading her other work. A five star book.
