Interview with When Life Gives You Lemons, Drink Coffee! By Deanna Martinez-Bey

What inspired your book?
Often times my life events help give me ideas for my books. Of course, I add to the stories and change them up quite a bit to make them unrecognizable to those who know me…but, that is all the fun of writing fiction! You never know what is true and what is not!
Which character in your story do you relate the most to?
I definitely relate to the main character, Janine. It’s a funny thing…she is a southern lady who often uses the word, “ya’ll” and I am a northern woman who never does! But, we still have a lot in common.
How long have you been publishing your work?
I have been writing for Examiner.com since 2009 and other online sites as well. I self published my first two self-help books and in 2011, my first novel, Twinkle, Twinkle Christmas Star was published by Emerging Edge.
What does your writing environment look like?
I have a red desk with a matching red chair. It is tucked away in the corner of our bonus room with a window nearby (for gazing). I have a picture frame on my desk with a quote by Flannery O’Connor that states:
“The writer is only free when he can tell the reader to go jump in the lake. You want, of course, to get what you have to show across to him, but whether he likes it or not is no concern of the writer.”
I absolutely LOVE this quote of hers.
Do you have any routines to help you write?
I write best in the afternoon and early evening. Each time I sit down to write I read over the last chapter of what I wrote in my previous writing session. This helps get me into the proper frame of mind to pick up where I left of…with ease.
